Mekong Delta photos

Thanks to my Mum for letting me off for my spelling xx
The following photos are of life on and off the water along the Mekong Delta, sadly we did not have a blue sky but the weather was still very warm
Love this of a Mum and her baby sharing their noodles

We went on a smaller rowing boat along the canals which was really tranquil
Yellow marigolds for the new year

This made me smile, a lady having a pedicure on the street while selling water melons
This lady was cleaning her teeth at the back of her house on the river
women at work on the back of their boats, it's a tough  life
Lady doing her washing on the side of the river

Lady selling hot pork and noodles
View from the roof of the boat
Man lazing in his hammock on back of boat, the hanging clothes are every where outside boats and houses, not always drying but where they are kept

Mekong Delta

We left Saigon 7am arrived at 10am, our  first stop was a small floating market on the Mekong Delta, we were on a motor boat with approx 26 people, later on we transfered to small rowing boats and went down small canals which was really pretty. Stopped off at village for lunch, afternoon along the river. We stayed the night in Tho Can, it had a large market selling so much fruit and veg, they  have stalls, instead had the produce set out along the pavements. In the evening we went for a walk, the whole country is getting ready for the new year, majority of people go backto the villages and spend a few days with their families, it is custom  to take lots of biscuits and sweets so there was lots of that on sale along the street. Water melon and yellow flowers are also on sale every where as they are bought by every household at this time of year.
That evening there was a stage show with dancers in bright costumes, it caused chaos on the road as hundreds of people on mopeds just pulled onto the side of the road to watch. It was an amazing sight, I am sure we were the only standing spectators, all others were on their scooters.
Next day we set off 7am (not keen on all these early starrts, I am on holiday) for the busiest floating market on the Mekong Delta. It was so lovely approaching it on the water, there was so much early morning life to see. We went past all the homes on the waters edge, some of them in bad state of repair. On reaching the market our boat cruised slowly into the heart of it and  there half of  us climed onto the roof to get a better view while the other half went onto a smaller boat to be able to get amongst the market easier.
It was truely fascinating, these people live on the boats as well as sell from them so we saw women washing clothes, pots, pans and plates etc on the back of the boat with water they had pulled up straight from the river in a bucket.
Each boat sold a different produce so would be piled high with different fruit or veg, other smaller boats would come by and load up and take off to another. What was really fun was the small propeller boats winding their way among all the others selling drinks and food, one lady had a range of cold drinks and hot/iced tea and coffe, another had a burner with a big pot of soup and was serving bowls of noodles and pork with soup ladled on top, they always have time for eating, they crouch down with their bums almost on the floor and scoop up their food with chopsticks from small bowls as though it were their last meal,a sight that will stay with me.
If they are not eating they are sleeping, anywhere and every where throughout Asia there are people sleeping. Hammocks are strung up all over the place, restaurants, the road side, tuk tuk and taxi drivers tie them up and rest while waiting for a fare, they had them on most of the boats, I have to say it's usually the men in them. They use them  to rock small children to sleep in, they swing them so fast and high i am suprised the child doesn't come out.
We spent about half an hour on top of the boat, I could have stayed all day there was so much activity all around. We then took our turn and went off in the small boat among the sellers, it was interesting to be up close and see the bartering and transfering of produce often chain ganged from one boat to another.
Later in the day instead of doing the long drive back to Ho Chi Min (Saigon) Frans and I arranged that we could stay in the last town we visited and be picked up this morning to do todays tour.
So, we found ourselves a hotel with a balcony over looking the Mekong river for less than 10 pds. The price included 2 bottles water, toothbrush/paste, soap, shampoo and a fridge, in fact the whole 3 days cost us less than 30pds. We did eat local food in the street cafes each night where a meal is about a pound. Really tasty though, something like stir fried chicken/pork and veg with rice or noodles.
Today we went off again in a small boat down another part of  the Delta, it was so pretty and again so interesting watching the local people go about their day. We  visited a place that showed the whole process of making rice noodles, and then on to a rice factory.
We came back to Saigon tonight and checked into our 4th room in 4 nights (it will be our 5th tomorrow) I am looking forward to some chill time on the beach, the Island looks lovely and I have a good book to read.
One last thing to mention, I do realise there are numerous spelling mistakes throughout this blog, some times I have read it back and cringed myself.
The problems are;
1, I am often in an internet cafe paying by the hour and therefore in a hurry with no time to spell check
2, I have used many key pads with sticky keys
3, I am rubbish ay spelling!
And on this occasion I am off to go and meet Frans and have a well earned drink.
Will put photos on in next couple days.

Plans

Ok, it's Thurs early evening and we have got some plans.
Tomorrow 7am we are off on a 3 day 2 night trip on the Mekong Delta, to include a visit to the busiest and the largest floating market to watch buyers bargaining and exchanging goods from their boats and visit a couple of local villages where we cycle around.
We stay over night then move on next day for more river cruising and other delights which will be better explained when we have done them..
We get back  to Ho Chi Minh on Sun eve and then on Monday we have booked a one way flight to Phu Quoc Island on the west of Vietnam, it looks absolutely beautiful and the books say to get there quick before it is turned into another Phuket.
We booked one way as not sure how long we will stay yet.
We have now been travelling together for a month, during that time we have;
Been to 3 countries
Slept in 12 rooms
Travelled;
26hrs on coach
12 hour mini bus
10 hr tuk tuk
5 hr boat
4 hr bicycle
2.5 hr plane
1 hr taxi
4hr rikshaw
Cocktails-too many to mention
Not bad for starters eh?

Will be back after our Mekong adventures.
Bye for now, Miss Saigon xx

Another day in HCMC

Last night we were people watching until late, it was fascinating. We went to a couple of places for drinks and watched the locals go about their evening.
He/she was cooking the seafood

This is the local currency, I had 247,000 vietnamese dong, and thought it was loads when in actual fact it is only worth just over 7 GBPs, Frans thinks it's really funny that I get so confused with all the naughts.

Two friends all dressed up but seemingly with no place to go as they stayed at the roadside for a very long time chatting and eating fresh seafood
Today we went on a second sightseeing tour of this amazing city.
We started by having a traditional breakfast of noodle soup, a very thin consistency, you can chose to have either beef or chicken included.
It comes with a bowl of fresh herbs and bean shoots to add as you wish.
It is tasty and filling without the calories.
Next, the sights

Inside the Jade Pagoda
After that we hired a rikshaw (this time we were in it together) and went first ly to the Jade Emperor Pagoda, followed  by China town which is a was poorer part of town but very interesting.
It was hilarious dodging through all the traffic, somehow we got to our destinations
Inside the market at China town, these are dried shrimps, available in many sizes
I love  this photo of a waitress having a nap

Yet another street food vendor
The lonely planet travel guide said about Vietnam, 'If cooking were a painting,Vietnam would have one of the most colourful palettes'

After the market and Pagoda we visited the War Museum, we saw horrible images of torture and of victims of the chemical sprays used. It was all very sobering.

We are now planing our next location, I think a trip the Mekong Delta is a favoured option, and then possibly a few days on a beautiful island.
So many places, so much time...

Good Morning Vietnam!

Arrived in Hochi Min (Saigon) around 7pm yesterday.

OMG!!! it's absolutely crazy, I have never seen so many mopeds in my life let alone in one place, honestly they are like termites, thousands of them on the move.
It makes Bangkok seem almost sleepy by comparison..
We found a nice guest house in the heart of the city but managed to get a quiet room at the back, we went straight out into the madness and had some local brew and our first Vietnamese food.
There is so much choice and all promises to be tasty.
Today we went for a walking tour of the city, first stop markets

This lady was chatting away while the guy was sorting out his crabs

Quick food break, people all over Asia always seem to be eating
She seems very comfortable around the fish
Decisions, decisions
This guy was carrying big chunks of ice, he later crushed it for sale
Negotiating with the rikshaw driver, he didn't stick to his word on the price so we legged it after taking a few photos and being driven round the city for 10 minutes amongst the moped chaos
Makeshift table and chairs..

This lady is also eating
Beer any one?
A typical street side area to grab some food on the go
This lady is deep frying fish

I tried to capture the moped madness, we stood at a junction watching, they are millimetres apart, and what you can't hear is the constant beeping of horns, no one takes a blind bit of notice.
Spot the guy on the left driving on the pavement, it is a common sight, if they can't get through on the road they take to the pavements
They're off!
Peeling garlic
Well, that was the first day in Vietnam, a total assault on the senses, what an amazing crazy place Hochi Min City is.
Tomorrow we plan to walk some more and take in the war museum and other sights.

Last days in Kanchanaburi

So, we spent the past 4 days mainly chilling out by the pool at our guest house in Kanchanaburi, we now have the visa and flight for Vietnam and fly 4pm this afternoon
Yesterday we hired push bikes again and cycled all around the town and along the river, it is so pretty and calm, it's a lovely town to relax in.
We decided to buy some fruit for when we got back to the pool and Frans found a grapefruit!
BLOODY HUGE!  It was so funny when he put it into the front basket on the bike, where it kept rolling around it was really hard to steer.
Before cutting it open I mde him pose for some silly photos..
This was the scene outside the guest house this morning, fresh meat and veg for sale from mobile butcher.
In all the time here, I have not had a bad belly,

See you in Vietnam

Bridge Over The River Kwai

We hired bicycles early yesterday morning and cycled along to the Bridge on The River Kwai
It was lovely as we were no tourists there (later in the day it was packed)
                                                          Bridge on the River Kwai

We were lucky to see the Eastern and Orient Express pass over
There were some floating restaurant where you could view the bridge from
There was the inevitable touristy stuff for sale, I liked that they had built around the big tree
After all the cycling and walking about, you can imagine how pleased I was to find a perfect sized packet of crisps

We have now got our Visas through for Vietnam so tomorrow or Mon morning we will get a flight.

More elephant pics and Kanchanaburi

I think this video should be viewable although its not the best one I took but as they take so long to upload (and I am hungry) you will have to make do

So, it's now Wednesday and we got the 10 hour 10pm VIP bus to Bangkok last night, really comfy reclining seats, incl in the 15pd price was bottle water, can of liptons lemon tea, slice of cake, 2 pks biscuits, packet nuts, 2 x face fresheners and a carton of orange yogurt this morning. The transport and service in Thailand is really very good, miles away from anything I have experienced in UK.
At Bangkok we walked through the bus station and got a 2 hour minibus to said Kanchanaburi, we checked into lovely guesthouse near the river for 14pds a night with really nice outdoor pool. I decided to do nothing all day but sunbathe and swim and that's exactly what I have done.
Frans has sorted out the visas for Vietnam and I think we will book a flight to South Vietnam on Sunday.
Off now for some food at restaurant by the river. Good then x

Elephants!

We decided to spend our last day at an Elephant park, there were just 28 elephants and never more than 30 tourists there at any one time. We spent the day feeding, riding and bathing them
I'm off!
You can almost hear me laughing in this one!
We were chosen to lead the group

Chilling with the mahouts in the forest
Frans and Elephant bathing
Not sure what has happened with this video, its of the elephant scratching itself with piece if sugar cane, I had trouble viewing it, hope you have better luck

We are on the over night bus tonight to Bangkok (yes, again) trouble is, everything goes from there.
We decided to go to Vietnam but because we would prefer to fly as over land takes forever, we need to go to Bangkok for flight and get  a visa that takes 3 days. So, meanwhile we are going west to Kanchanaburi for 3 days to see the 'Bridge over the river Kwai' and other things to do.
That's the plan anyway, right off to get ready for the next journey (thanks to Doc in advance once again for my magic pills that help me to sleep on a long boring journey)
zzzzzzzz
